We went camping Monday thru Thursday at our favorite COE CG here in WV. (East Fork CG at East Lynn Lake) Quite an adventure. Tuesday evening, the wife got a couple of pieces of wood and threw on the fire. She was going back to get more and let out a yell. "Tom, there's a snake in the wood pile!!!". I grabbed my shovel, and went to investigate. I found a not to happy copperhead, coiled up and displeased with my presence. Did I mention he (or she) was NOT HAPPY. I disposed of the snake. In the next 36 hours we were there, we saw several more copperheads and a bunch of snakes in the water swimming that we didn't feel the need to find out what type they were. So just a reminder, in your travels this spring/summer, be careful and watch where you step. In approx 25 or 30 trips to this same CG over the last 5 years, these were the first snake we encountered there. Remember, we are encroaching into their territory when we venture into some of these nicely wooded CGs.

I saw my first two for this season last week here in King george VA. It is the season to be be careful.The wife and I were tent camping sitting out at Otter Creek camp site up on the Blue Ridge next to the creek enjoying the late afternoon. I got up to get get something and when I came back there was a snake coiled up under the wife's chair. I very softly spoke to try not to scare the wife all that much and said something like I think you should calmly move away from the chair as there is snake under your chair... That didn't work too well haha... The snake went one way and I went the other way.... Chair went flying... Nothing calm about any of that...I was afraid the snake would get under out tent flooring. I finally got him escorted to the creek and pitched him out into the cold water with my big stick...A lady Ranger was driving by just after it happened and asked how were we doing so she got to hear the story right away haha...True storyRoy and Carolyn

we drove through Pilot Mountain State Park this week and on the way down from the summit, there was a snake in the roadway. Looked like a black snake but we didn't get close enough to determine that! Did I say I don't like snakes????? We may have to stick to resort parks for awhile if we see any more!!

Terrified of ANY snake. Two weeks ago I mulched, looked back to the flower bed and a 2-3 ft. silver snake was there. (DH said garter snake, but he didn't see it. Silver & Gold denote royalty - so it was a King Cobra.) The next day a friend & I rode 20 miles on the Towpath trail. I rode right by a snake coming out on the trail. Later a snake was stretched across the trail. A VERY brave man got to it first and convinced it to leave. Near the end of the ride a snake was coiled near the trail. Everyone thinks they were black harmless snakes - HA! they didn't see them - probably anacondas! Why I love all things outdoors when I hate snakes, I can't figure. I told DH we need to move, sell 5er, bikes, motorcycles, and move to a high rise in the city. DH said with my luck we'd end up w/ neighbors who have pet snakes.

You do know that killing a snake in most, if not all states, is illegal.

No such blanket laws in Washington State or Oregon, though there are a few "protected" species that it's illegal to kill/possess.

I saw a crow pecking at something in the middle of our road the other day and went over to see what it was doing. It was killing a small rat snake, about 18 in. long. When the snake would raise it's head, the crow would peck it right in the head. the crow finally picked it up and flew away. I'm an old geezer, lived in the country all my life, and I've never seen that before.

Sorry but if I even think it could be dangerous to me or my family it's getting the shovel. I'm no snake expert so a friendly might go down but I'll deal with the mice before I chance my kids getting bit!

Love it when you see rattlers get caught and then released!!! Sorry they should be killed every time! They can only hurt someone....

The mice cause way more damage to us than any rattler will do in a lifetime. We have two types up here in PA, and also have the copperhead. Sitings are 1000:1 non venomous: venomous
It realy ticks me off when fools in PA call a nothern water snake a water moccasin. Idiot flat landers!

Growing up on a ranch we killed rattlers around the living area. A working cattle dog is worth more than a snake. Rafting the rivers of Idaho I carried a snake hook to deposit the snake in the river in order let the current carry them away from people. The warm beaches we camped on were a big attraction to rattlers in the evening. Lewis and Clark have an entry in the journals about how many rattlers they encountered along the Salmon River.

well all you guys who are afraid of snakes, rattle snakes that is, should stay away from the snake river in eastern Oregon. tons of snakes out here and skunks too.

Here in the midwest we are having all kinds of wildlife issues with the flooding and high water everything is moving out of the bottom ground whether it is snakes all the way to deer. I have seen more dead deer along the roads this spring than ever. Just be careful
