Rat Snakes around here are generally black pattern, cream or whit underneath.
You can walk right up to them or at least some of the time. They let a stink to get you to leave them alone, sometimes. We had two on seperate occasions, over the basement doorway and the front door.
We think they smelled Daughter's Guinea Pig. The one over the basement door was at least twelve foot long. It was from the ground up over the 30 in door and nearly to the ground with it's head. I walked right up to it, in the grass a few minutes later. I know they don't say they get that big.
Black Racers will chase you no matter how big you are. The things are fast. I never had one to bite me but it came right up to my feet. I picked up a stick and it ran/crawled away. Darned things are too fast, when it is warm anyway, to try to grab it.
Trout fishing in Middle Tn I watche a huge black snake, of undetermined species, fall from a cliff top about 40 ft maybe. It landed, with a giant kerplat, flat on it's belly. It was near big around as my leg and way longer than my body. It crawled, somewhat slowly between rock seams.
There are lots of snakes out there that don't seem to be identified. One was a beautiful almost day glow green with light green belly, arrow shaped head and about three feet long but slender. Son picked it up and it curled around his wrist and forearm. We studied it for a while. never showed any aggression or alarm. We let go on a small sapling on the fence line. It disappeared into the foliage. Only thing on net I found was vine snake supposedly poisonous...but this is North America.
