Yes, there are snakes in the southwest. I have seen one on the trails I have gone on twice and I hike in a lot of places. I recommend wearing long pants and hiking boots. If you hike with a dog, get a rattlesnake vaccine. It does not stop them from getting sick, but it gives you about an extra half hour to get to the vet.
