Actually, experiments have shown that is a myth. People are not nicer when they use their real names online. And, of course, there is more danger, if some users are female, or ethnic minorities, or other groups who get targeted a lot.
The key is just to hang out with good people, online as in real life! And, really, I think there are a lot of good'uns on this forum :).
