IMO it's partly because of the anonymity.
Actually, experiments have shown that is a myth. People are not nicer when they use their real names online.
I think part of the problem is that you are still rather anonymous, even when you use your real name. Yea, you know my name but you don't know where I live or work. I can still call you names and not suffer any consequence of it.
Something that I see on this particular forum is the sub-groups that people tend to put themselves in. A lot of threads spiral out of control quickly when we start talking about Ford vs Gm... half ton vs 3/4 ton... diesel vs gas. There is a lot of "class distinction" on this board and the prevailing attitude is acceptance of it here.
It is perfectly acceptable to a lot of people to TRASH someone because they have a gas instead of diesel or a diesel instead of a gas. The general opinion of people who own a half ton truck is that they are stupid/unsafe/ignorant.
This type of division is frequent and can be seen in most threads, especially those about tow vehicles. Rather than try to see what we have in common (RV's, destinations, campfire recipes, etc) we see what separates us. As long as this attitude is considered acceptable, it will continue.
