So all of you 1500 haters

We were driving up 321 earlier running 70 MPH. A 3500 with what looked like a 28' toy hauler passed us. We watched it as it SWAYED, wiggled, wondered around on the road, and nearly went in the ditch.

So you see, It does not matter what you tow with. If not done correctly. It will sway. Having a 2500, or 3500 is NO magic elixir. My 30' TT is dead still behind my F150. I would not be in that 3500 with that TT hooked to it. It was too scary
  • Hate to break it to you, but the 3500 had nothing to do with what you saw. (" watched it as it SWAYED, wiggled, wondered around on the road, and nearly went in the ditch")

Anyway, glad you are happy with your truck and that it works good for you.
  • What would you rather be behind? a 3500 dually towing a 35 foot 5`er well within it`s limits with a newby behind the wheel? or a 1500 with a 32ft TT that is 500lbs over it`s GVWR with a seasoned driver behind the wheel?
  • The only thing we really know for sure is that the 3500 was towing way too fast.

If you had a bigger truck you could actually tow it down the road. :B
  • Fact is that a 1500 would've been in the ditch. That's the difference between the two.
  • In about 1949 a trailer dealer here in Billings towed a 22 foot M System trailer house (No, NOT a Travel Trailer, a TRAILER HOUSE) from here to Hungry Horse with a 6 cylinder Chevy half ton. No WD hitch or sway control (they hadn't been invented yet). I don't know if he had a brake controller or not. I suppose he did. Anyway, the trip went just fine, except that the little kitchen stove fell over.
So, yes, of course, a half ton can tow a trailer house. Also, remember that back then a half ton was a REAL half ton (6000 lb. GVW), not a derated 3/4 ton!
In 1968 I loaded all our worldly possessions in a 1951 Ford F1, hooked the Corvair Spyder to the back bumper with a homemade towbar made out of a Model A front wishbone, and drove from NW Montana to Seattle. No problems. No brakes on the Corvair, either. Again, they hadn't been invented yet (well, I had never heard of such a system if it did exist.)
Yes, a half ton pickup can be very versatile, IF one pays attention and drives carefully!
  • If he was driving like that, it sounds like he was running with a stolen camper. Hitch up and run, no concern for WD bars, chains, sway protection or anything. It's not a tribute to any size truck when your driving like an idiot, running from the law, drunk, or on drugs.
  • I tow my 24ft 5th wheel with my GMC 1500......I do not go 70 ever.....55-60 is my max
