I just mentioned the crate because if he was crate trained when he road in the car, then you don't have to take him for a "test fit", just take the crate! :)
My recollection from reading towing guides is that the manual transmission Suburu's are all approved for flat towing. I just mentioned it because you said you liked them, and they can be flat-towed, but I didn't read a response from you about that. So if you like them, and wifey doesn't mind a manual tranny, then they should be considered as well.
