Normally it is best to take SS as early as you can. This statement is based on real life observations.
If you can't afford to live off of your income when you take it early then you need to continue to work some and take it or continue to work full time and not take it. If that is the case just be aware that at full retirement age you likely won't be able to live off your income and will need to work till death.
SS was never designed to be your full income in retirement but many people were just never able to put money aside to fund their future. Many people try to live off of only SS. Many people had jobs that don't have a retirement plan. Had it not been for the government these people wouldn't have a penny to live on and the public would be fully supporting them. For this reason alone I am thankfull for SS. I am glad they were forced to "contribute" to the system.
