Stifel Nicolas just ran an analysis for us looking at my wife's SS. She is currently 2 years away from full benefits, but they continue to improve if she waits to 70. Best option for us is for her to take spousal benefits at 66 (half of mine) and not take her own benefit until she hits 70.
The spousal benefit is available to wives or husbands, still married or divorced or widowed. You can take the larger of your own benefit or half of your spouses, but you can start spousal benefit at full retirement age and switch to your own when it hits the max.
Good option, that's what we are doing.
