I believe "max" is meant "the full benefit", not a max amount of payments.
This is something I considered. I can't take full benefits until 67. My Mom died at age 67. My Dad and grandparents died in mid-70s. The odds are not in my favor to benefit from waiting.
I also considered my current situation. I have money invested that will provide for me when I retire (knock on wood nothing screws that up). Knowing that the first 10 years of my retirement will be my most active, my plan will be to enjoy those years, and then use my SS payments to recoup any over-spending I may have done in those early years. In order to recoup as much as possible, it currently appears that early SS will be a bigger help than waiting.
