Prior to LEO I had enough years working for the USAF to qualify for SS payments. But the government doesn't want me making too much in retirement so they cut the SS payout by half, money that I am entitled to but for my service as a cop. Sux.

If I were you, I would check into this further if you haven't done so already. Just so you know what will happen when you die and maybe make plans now.
After my Dad died, my Mom received 55% of my Dads military pension. Then about four months after he died. She got a letter stating they were taking 1/2 of the 55%. Reason...my Dad had some military time when he did not pay into SS. Neither one of them knew about "off set pension". Left my Mom with just about nothing.
