If you are in your 60's, married, and in good health, there is a good chance one or both of you will live into your late 80's or even 90's. In that case, waiting pays off well. And if the man (typically the higher wage earner) dies first, the wife will benefit even more drawing from his higher SS payments.
I considered waiting until 70, but started at 66 (full retirement age). DW started drawing from mine at 66 while she is delaying drawing from her own until 70 to allow it to increase. She draws slightly less by drawing from mine, but will draw considerably more when she starts on hers. No guarantees of course, but good health and old age runs in both families.
Agree with above. Demise of SS has been predicted by the doomsayers for decades. It is a rare financial adviser that recommends taking early without extenuating circumstances.
