There is no moral dilemma here.
Is it yours? Answer is NO
DO you know who it belongs to? Answer is yes.
Should you have picked it up? NO !
IT WAS NOT YOURS
I guess you've never picked up a piece of garbage in your neighborhood and put it in a nearby trashcan huh? Sure hope that "high horse" that you are riding on is your's, not one that you stumbled across...
No it has to do with a moral upbringing and being taught BY MY PARENTS to leave stuff alone that does not belong to me. So I would have left the horse where I found it. I would have thrown the garbage away (see conversion below)
I do not have situational ethics/morals.
It is one of the 10 commandments thou shall not steal.

To me the taking of another's property is immoral the cost does not matter.
I've got to give it to you, I admire your point of view, even if I think you are completely blowing this out of proportion. Good for you if your moral fortitude is truly that strong.
Me, I consider this a piece of trash on the side of the road that the OP picked up. It doesn't make much difference to me if he simply throws the piece of garbage away, places it in a recycling bin (assume its plastic?) or re-purposes it by using it for himself. This is no different to me than a magazine, a shoe, or any other item that finds its way to the side of the road. Technically all those things have value. The OP didn't take the item with the intent to deprive the owner of property. For those posting laws about theft, perhaps you should check the associated case law for definitions of ABANDONED PROPERTY.
After reading some other posts, I think it couldn't hurt to call the company listed on the side and see if they have any interest in coming to collect it.
