Normally I would say if you found something, turn it in. That would apply to something left at a campsite. A soda crate at the side of the road hardly qualifies. There is no lost and found for junk at the side of the road. There is no feasible way to return it without spending more time and effort than the thing is worth. Finders, keepers seems to apply to this case. I would not have given it a second thought. You have done a good service by picking up the trash next to the road.

To the OP - I absolve you of your grievous sin. For your penance, take 3 shopping carts left at bus stops back to their rightful grocery store.
