I doubt the OP is part of a nationwide crate-stealing ring. Using the numbers in the article, I would estimate the black market value of the soda crate to be $0.25 - $0.50 on the high side. They have to be moving a lot of crates to make any money. Seems inefficient, but hey, our local cops just busted a couple of dudes that were part of a battery stealing ring. They were stealing car batteries from WalMart and returning them to other WalMarts. I'm in NJ, they came from Michigan to pull this scam. They were caught with shopping carts (plural) full of car batteries that they were unloading from a Hyundai. Really hard to make this stuff up https://www.tapinto.net/towns/roxbury/articles/police-multi-state-stolen-battery-scammers-short. Makes me tired just thinking about it. I wouldn't make a good thief. No word on whether the shopping cart was stolen.
