I'm sure your comment was tongue in cheek (or I hope it was...) but you know that Timothy McVeigh was stopped for a simple traffic violation, turns out he committed the worst act of terrorism to hit the US at the time.
From reading the attached story, sounds like the arrestee was a career criminal and it is in the best interest of the jurisdiction if he is behind bars as much as possible.
No I absolutely was not tongue in cheek. if the local PD has sufficient personnel to "profile" individuals out for an evening ride they have excessive officers. If that would have been the mayor's kid I think they would have told him to drop it off at 7-11, but since they had profiled this citizen a different outcome/arrest/charges were filed.
and somehow linking to Mr. McVeigh is ludicrous at best. they stopped him for a simple violation. did that prevent the disaster? NO
