Southern Colorado

Cuchara and the La Veta area are nice, they are on the eastern slope. The Spanish Peaks have some nice hiking trails. West of Colorado City is Bishop Castle, a cool old castle built by this guy and his family over the last few decades, free to wander at your own risk but donations are accepted.

The Dog Bar in Cuchara has some good food and La Veta has a few local restaurants that are good as well.

They were pulling trout out of Vallecito like crazy when I was there. Big suckers, too. The Durango/Silverton train is a must, as is Mesa Verde.

Check out the Anasazi Cultural Center at Cortez. Part of the "Trail of the Ancients".

I like to do a lot of hiking, fishing, fishing, and fishing. We are looking for more mountains. I don't need any hardcore rock climbing adventures, just nice scenic trails to walk the dogs and good places to fish. We would like to be near a small town that also has some good mom and pop food joints.

We stayed a couple of days in South Fork and if I remember correctly there was only 1 restaurant and it was not that great. Silverton and Ouray on the other hand are full of mom and pops.

Thanks for the recommendations! South Fork it is. We may just spend a couple of weeks down there and try a couple different spots. I am looking forward to the mom and pop places for sure. I have seen so many small towns along the way that have been hit hard with poverty, and where Walmart and the dollar store are the only places in town. Once and a while we stumble across something nice. I think small town America has been grossly underestimated.

South Fork, Creede, Lake City & Pagosa Springs all have a wide variety of campgrounds and outdoor activities.
Its not unusual that some folks love a park and others dislike the same park. We all have different priorities, preferences, likes & dislikes. During my summer months in Colorado, I don't care what amenities the park has, I'm gone all day enjoying the mountains, trails, rivers & lakes. I only want a quiet place to sleep at night and sometimes that depends on who parks next to you, regardless of how nice the rv park is.
