Spare tire usage

Had our 5er for over 7 years now and never used the spare tire mounted under the front. Replaced the 4 tires a couple of years ago and wondering if the spare tire may need replaced, even though it has not been used ( If one of my tires has a problem, I would need a quality spare to replace it ). Appreciate your advice.
  • the only thing I can recommend is that you take the spare out from under once in awhile. I had mine under the rear for 5 years and when I took it out it took 45 minutes because of all the rust etc. After that I carried it in the pickup box.
  • I use spare just for spare-I don't rotate them in. Rarely have I ever put more than a couple hundred miles on a spare tire, and usually much less. If it were mine, I'd check the date code and confirm it is 7 years old. If so, I'd keep it another year or two. If it was pushing 10 years I'd replace it.

Tires fail from flexing, heat and age. Take away the road fatigue, the tire is diminished from age only. I think if it was stored out of sun and carried proper inflation pressure at time of use, it would be good for a few hundred miles if it was 7 or 8 years old.
  • At the least give it a visual inspection, but for peace of mind, particularly if you have any major trips planned, I would bite the bullet and replace.
  • When I replaced the tires on my MH last summer, I replaced the spare also. It was cheap peace of mind.
  • When I bought new Maxxis for our trailer two years ago, I bought 5 and integrate the spare into the rotation. I don't know if it makes huge difference or not. Just trying to keep things even.
  • for me if it were mine, I would inspect it and possibly keep it for a few more years… but if needed it would only be a spare to get to the next tire shop then back into the rack… I have used tires on the ground for much more than 7 years many times before…

but I could never recommend that to you or anyone else because I don’t know anything about the tire how it was maintained for seven years even though it was never used, or even if it is really 7 years old by the date code, no matter the trailer might be 7 years in your position…
  • We incorporate both of our spares in the rotation of the other RV tires. You should do the same. Check www.michelinrvtires.com
  • YES.......

Trailer tires age out vs wear out
A spare tire 7 yrs old is OLD
