I'm with Grit Dog on this one too. Sometimes you need to put your head down and push through when life involves young kids, a more than full time job and a finite number of vacation days each year. We'll hammer out 1000 miles towing in a day when necessary. Dinking along at 60-65 down an empty western highway when covering those distances adds hours, not minutes.
We pulled the Cannonball run last summer on the way home. 2000 miles, 2 days, with the camper on. Wasn't pretty, but got er done and got home in time for a soccer tourney AND maximized our vacation. Only a year n a half until our oldest can drive! Once he can be in the pilot seat I predict long road trips will result in more naps for dad!
