If you do remove the check valve (like some suggested) you may end up with only warm water. I would save the valve in case you need to reinstall it to get your hot water back. Last thing you want is an open plumbing loop.
My water heater and 1000's with similar install have NO check valves as they were installed with 3 shut off valves instead (cold/bypass/hot)
Open a faucet hot side & water flows, due to supply pressure, in thru bottom of WH tank and hot water comes out top.
Open up faucet cold side & water flows again due to supply pressure, out the faucet
Hot does NOT backflow into cold water system due to the presence of the supply pressure
No downside to not having check valve
