We use public probably 80-90% of the time. When we do use private it is for convenience or when no public campgrounds are available, never because the private 1 is our destination. Public are usually more natural and give a feel of really "camping" and not just traveling with a house on wheels. Also, the sites are usually further apart, more private and at lower cost. Public campgrounds are certainly inconsistent as to amenities but 1 learns to find the ones which meet your needs. Also find that neighbors at public campgrounds are more likely to spend time out of their unit and be more hiking/nature oriented, want to share a campfire, etc. For years I wouldn't even consider a campground that has that "manicured" city park like look rather than natural but I've moderated.
