Stealth Camping

I've been at campgrounds where the "office" is only opened for part of the day, like 8 am to 5 pm. After that no one is around to check campers in.

I know some folks arrive late and pay in the morning, but a couple of times I've seen a camper arrive late and then leave before the office opens.

Anyone else seen this? Rare or common?
  • Saw it a couple of times or assumed it was the case. There may have been some arrangement with campground but doubtful.
  • Summer of 2012 DW and I were camp hosts at a state park in Kansas and it happened a couple times. They came in after I had gone to bed around 10pm and were gone when I left for work the next morning. Not much you can do about it.

No, I don't pay that much attention to what other people are doing.

If I did notice it, I would probably assume they slipped a check under the door or paypaled or something.

And if not, who cares? They probably aren't hooking up or using the laundry if they are there such a short time. Let the campground hosts worry about it if they want to.
  • I have seen it in some smaller/owner run CGs.

Don't really think 'Stealth Camping' is the right term.......Thievery is what it is!

Low life thieves......well guess some 'stealth campers' could be included in that group also
  • i don't think the op is referring to state forests, where you are on self service

i think he referring to private operations that close the office early
and what he is referring to amounts to thief of services

    i have never witness this
but i don't stay in private CG's very much
  • We know that some rangers patrol during the night. They know what site has paid and they get the license # for those that haven't.
