Steering wheel unlocked when towing with a dolly?

I have flat towed and obviously the steering needs to be unlocked to allow the wheels to turn in order to track behind the MH.
Does the wheel also need to be unlocked when using a tow dolly, such as an Acme dolly?
  • The Acme dolly is a very entry level dolly, and very light weight. It does not have a rotating pan, so the wheels of the car must be unlocked. Other tow dolly's have a rotating pan that the wheels sit on, and they are supposed to be used with the vehicle wheels locked, although I've towed both ways with mine. So it depends on the dolly.

  • My Demco Kar Kaddy has steerable wheels, so I turn the ignition of the PT Cruiser to LOCKED and remove the key.
I would not have any dolly that did not have some kind of steering, either the steerable wheels like the Demco or a pivoting pan like some others.
  • If you use the Acme tow dolly I believe they call for unlocked. If locked you could damage the steering and steering column in your vehicle. With the Master tow and some others the pan of the dolly turns so you can lock the steering column. Find your owners manual for there recommendation.

Makes no difference, it will trail locked or unlocked.
  • I always towed my Windstar FWD van with the key out of it. Normally the steering wheel will not lock when straight, but instead will lock when turned more than about 8 degrees to the left or right.

I always towed with the wheels turned straight, and it never seems to turn on it's own while on the dolly. My dolly could turn the wheel carriage right and left, while tracking the motorhome.

Do you have the front wheels or the back wheels up??
