Hey mlts you can make your low tech deterrent a bit better. Get one of the plastic license plates that the new car dealers put in the frame until the real plates come. Turn it over and write STOLEN on it in big bright red letters. Now every time you pull the plate to store in your truck, replace it with the stolen sign. That might get noticed faster than no plate at all. :)
I was thinking of something similar. Tie off a banner to the roof rack at the back.
- Leave it folded up with a brick to hold it down when in storage.
- When you take the trailer out, you know to untie it and pull it down.
- They won't know and when the brick bounces off...
A police officer may not notice the license plate says stolen but a 10' banner saying "STOLEN" flapping in the breeze is unlikely to escape notice.
If it wasn't for messing up your vacation, I would say just get the insurance payement and get a new rig.
