Stop using AIOW please!

I have been a member of this forum for over 15 years and have read thousands of posts during that time. I don't know if it's me, or is there really is an increase in the use of acronyms.

I seems to have started with the computer age, and now everyone is using acronyms instead of the real word(s).

I know some of them, but no where close to knowing all. Back at the beginning, it was cute to refer the the "DW", or maybe the "MIL". But folks, it is outta hand! Half the posts I read have acronyms I don't recognize and as a result, I miss out on a lot of information.

I have never been able to write a message that was too big to post and don't know if there is a limit, so why use so many archaic and mysterious combinations of capitol letters.

You know how annoying it is when someone uses ALL capitols? Well, it's just as annoying as using TOO MANY!!!

So please, stop using ACRONYMS INSTEAD OF WORDS!

FWIW, JMHO!!!

I was an aircraft mechanic in the Navy. Everyone who served knows the military is big on acronyms.
The pilots would write up descrepancy reports on problems with the Jets.
One of the new pilots wrote up one, "The Fuel Transfer Switch does not work in the OFF position."
I had to pull him aside and explain it.

    I don't get it.
  • Caveman Charlie -- OFF is not an acronym, it's just the OFF position, as in the opposite of ON, which is also not an acronym as in the ON position, the opposite of OFF.

Merry Christmas CC, which is not an acronym either ... :)

OOooooo I get it now. He was so used to acronyms that he didn't realize that Off meant, Off. lol That's funny.

Wow. I haven't read TMIAHM in many years!
  • I’ll add my dislike here “prolly” I guess this is supposed to be short for probably? So you lose 2 letters big deal. And add an extra L. Is it really that hard to type out 2 extra letters!

Maybe this guy knows how to do it?
    Gary Gulman on state abbreviations!
  • I agree with the poster.....yes I could look up acronyms that I don't know, but then it takes forever to read a post. It's no different than the guy that comes on and says...."My window doesn't work". No other information, no coach model, year or if it's even a coach, maybe it's his car....it's just exposing the ever-growing ignorance of our society. :(

Most come on here asking for a problem to be solved. If they ask in a way that has nothing but acronyms, I'm sure many move onto another post. Well...those two or three or ten people, especially older more knowledgeable guys, that just move on, could have been the ones that solved the issue. So, you're only hurting yourself and others who are expecting an accurate and helpful answer.
  • No matter how you don't want people using acronyms, it's only going to increase. With the past boom in RV sales, mainly by younger generations, acronyms on forums are only going to increase in usage, NOT decrease.
I'm 67 years old and I hate typing. So I embrace the use of acronyms, especially because it is becoming more and more common. So better get used to it.
