We use a Verizon Jetpack when we travel. Since weren't not full-timers, we just one-time pay to add 10GB of data to it whenever we take a trip. Between trips it just sits in it's case, turned off, with no monthly charges.
The Jetpack can be set to automatic mode, where is connects to cell towers at 1X, 3G, or 4G speed - whichever is the fastest speed available at the tower and depending upon our distance to the tower. With our laptop, we can non-video surf the net at only 1X connect speeds if that's all we can get through the Jetpack at any given time.
