We full-timed for 16 years with constant travel and public parks were always our first choice - national parks, state parks, national forests, county and city parks. We rarely made reservations. Even in the national parks we found a site. In Yellowstone and Grand Teton Nat'l Parks there are even campgrounds in the park that don't accept any reservations. Outside the parks you'll get a site if you arrive by early afternoon and preferable during the week by Thursday and stay through the weekend.
Reservations really limits you. You might want to stay longer or shorter. You might have vehicle problems or weather problems or you might want to drive fewer miles that day. If you're concerned for any one spot, just call ahead a few days prior when you can better judge your time.
You didn't state what parks you want to see so can't help you there. If you're going to work in Bryce Nat'l Park, Ruby's RV right outside the park gate has a huge amount of sites and that time of year you'll have no problem. If going to Arch's Nat'l Park, the town of Moab has a lot of RV parks. Zion has some electric sites and just outside the entrance at Springdale are a few RV parks. Driving distances are great for all those parks so I'd also advise not to get one park to base out of but instead, go to each area.
For Grand Canyon South, Trailer Village is the place to go. It's in the park near the Rim and the free shuttle stops right outside the RV park. You can ride all day getting on and off whenever. It's very convenient.
Have a great trip!
