Why does everyone here want to offer an explanation?
A smile and a simple "no" should be enough.
Is it required to be polite?
Sometimes people are more comfortable saying no when they have a good reason to back them up?
I suspect that if any of us were asked "Do you have some paper towel (or a cup of water)?" - ALL of us would offer some. It's just that inviting strangers in our "home" (especially where we can't see what they're doing) opens up our world to potentially bad things. And you can't judge a person by their looks - Jeffrey Dahmer was a clean-cut guy, too.
I certainly understand saying "NO." I would do the same thing.
But "No" is all I would say. I am not going to explain, make excuses,or lie. It is not needed.
