"TWC, and other forecasters, cry wolf very often - and people tend to get complacent when the disaster doesn't happen."
That is very true. In hurricane season TWC is my last source of information. I don't need all of the drama. The NHC site, with its stats & discussions is always first. From the horses mouth, so to speak.
The rest of the problems seem to come from people leaving it to the last possible moment to hit the road or run an errand. They do it with millions of others with the same thought process then most likely blame everyone else when they get stuck on the road in huge delays.
Can't blame the various state DOTs for not having the equipment. You don't spend millions on equipment that is going to sit outside for years unused. You can't use it anyway when the roads are clogged with cars & trucks.
Oh well, hope the lesson is learned. Don't take weather forcasters at their word. They like to claim that such & such weather will happen at such & such place at such & such time. As good as they may be, it does not work that way all of the time. When you see something coming that MAY hit your area, get off the road in good time otherwise you will become part of the problem.
When preparing for a hurricane my, in water, boat is secured as best as possible at least 48 hours before the winds are expected to BEGIN rising. The house preparations are finished at least 12 hours before. There is no reason, other than a medical emergency, to leave till after the storm or it becomes obvious that it will miss us. There are NO shelters to go to here. We stay in our homes during a storm.
