It is not a good idea to leave the cord coiled inside, with only a few feet extended. This can cause the cord to get hot, under heavy load.
I have the same problem, but no access panels. I pulled the entire 30' of cord out, got it nice and straight, softened in the sun. I then put 303 protectant on it, to make it slick. I coiled it back in, using even loops. It has worked pretty good ever since.
