Perhaps you need to find a witch or wizard to put a magic spell on your cord.
I have never had the problem you describe with my RV cord (and have no idea why!)
Every OTHER cord/hose I deal with is very quick to "tie knots" in themselves.
I like your idea of only pulling a little out (or pull it all out, cut the end off (except for a few feet) and get some new plugs to make an "external" cord out of what you cut off.)
