I thought of doing that also (the Marinco connector), but like you I went with cutting the power cord and adding female and male connectors. It was easier as well as cheaper. When I connect the "new" pig tail cord with the "new" extension/power cord, the connection is inside the compartment, protected from the elements. When I unhook I simply store the cord in the same large compartment. If I had one of those small power cord compartments, I would just store it in a different compartment.
