Supartz injections today

My ortho said it wouldn't hurt as bad as a cortisone shot. He LIED! Well, lied is too strong a word. in his defense, he did say he had never had one, but everyone else said it wasn't bad. OMG! It was soooo painful! I couldn't even move for about 10 min. And then I had to walk to the car and drive myself home. I can see why they require payment up front! Both knees have torn medial meniscii and are bone-on-bone. Just trying to buy some time.

My new mantra is: It's not as bad as double knee replacements.

yay!!!! happy to hear that chock!

When I had my tkr I ended up in the hospital for 6 days. I threw up for six days! I told the doc I was allergic to shell fish-iodine but he used that on my leg anyway?? Such a little bit, don't know if that was the culprit or the pain medication. They stopped all the pain meds too, just to see what was causing me to be so sick.

I'm allergic to Betadine--it makes me swell up and itch. Found that out when I used to work in labor & delivery years ago. A lot of healthcare workers don't want to believe it, but it's true. And my brother is so allergic to it he just about stops breathing!

I had my thumb joint removed and replaced a few years ago. I told everyone I came in contact with about the betadine allergy. A-ok. They did the surgery and sent me home on a bunch of narcotics. When I woke up 4 days later, my hand was itching and burning, I assumed because it was in a big, ol' bandaged up cast. Ten days later, the doctor removed the cast and I had 2nd degree chemical burns on my hand! My hand was covered in greasy gold betadine and blue Hibiclens. When I got to the bottom of the story, apparently someone "forgot" about the betadine and used it to scrub my hand. Realizing their mistake, they just splashed some Hibiclens over it.:M The problem is, Betadine comes in two styles--a thin liquid and a thick soap. You can rinse off the liquid, but you have to scrub off the soap and it is VERY hard to get off. My surgeon didn't see any of it because he was scrubbing in for surgery. By the time he got in there, my hand was all covered up with drapes so nothing was showing but my thumb. Grrr...

Well, last year I had to have gallbladder surgery. I took a Sharpie marker and wrote on my stomach "Allergic to Betadine." :B The surgical staff got a kick out of it and I didn't have to deal with betadine!

I had the same issue with my Right knee(bone on bone).....I tried everything before turning to surgery 2 years ago(fancy knee brace, chicken shots, cortizone shots)...when all was said and done, I wish I had done the total knee replacement many years earlier. One thing I will comment on and I know everyone's experience is different but I had General anesthetic and when I awoke in recovery.....without being overly explanatory(graphic), it wasnt a pleasant experience for 2-2 1/2 hours after surgery.

Yeah, I have very unpleasant reactions to gen'l anesthesia. I always throw up. And when I say always, I mean ALWAYS. I have had several surgeries and the nurse asks if I have problems with anesthesia--see above. Always. And they never fail to say, "Oh, we use some new stuff now! you won't be sick!" And it never fails. I throw up. One time I was waking up after surgery, sick as a dog, saying "I'm gonna throw up! I'm gonna throw up!" I couldn't even get my eyes open but I could hear my nurse make a real snarky comment to another nurse "Oh, she's just making herself sick." Unfortunately for her, she moved in a little too close and got a blast all over her shoes! I tried to tell her!~

Update on the knees--To my surprise and delight, my knees feel much better today! I haven't even had to take any pain medicine today, not even Tylenol! I wasn't expecting that at all. I even took the dog for a 1/2 mile walk with no problems. Huh! If it keeps going like this, I'll be a believer!

  • My DW has had 3 knee replacements. She actually has only 2 legs but after 10 years of her very busy lifestyle she had worn the first one crooked and it took a total replacement to repair. I can not keep up with her when we are out. She did all of the pre and post therapy and was almost the poster child for the procedure.
  • byways, I was in exactly the same position as you. Both my knees are bad. The doc was going to do the series of shots but after looking at my MRI he said I needed knee replacements. I still haven't done the left one. After hearing what chock said, thank goodness.

Chock I sure hope this works for you, fingers etc. crossed, and crossed again!!!
  • Not sure about that. I did the replacement (age 49). Chicken comb grease is some pretty neat stuff, but I heard how miserable and painful the injections are. They wanted to give me three series of the shots. I agreed, and then the doc said my knee was too far gone. That was three years ago. Ummm, just don't watch a youtube video of a knee replacement the night before surgery.
