I have had my brakes come on unexpectedly but the monitor has always let me know. I use the Blue Ox Patriot brake system and it has a wireless monitor that tells you when it applies the brakes. Before that I had the old Blue Ox system and a homemade wired monitor that indicated when the toad brakes were on.
I got mine last June and had a problem with the breakaway, but once I figured that out it has been great. I especially like the proportional breaking. The wireless monitor tells me all I need to know.
