- BumpyroadExplorerI don't care about the legality, I wouldn't tow without the brakes.
bumpy - trail-explorerExplorerYes, a dolly needs brakes, so things don't break when you can't stop due to not having brakes.
- gboppExplorerPlus the weight of the dolly, that's another 4-500 pounds.
Be safe and get a dolly with brakes. - CA_TravelerExplorer IIII want the safety factor of addional brakes. And I certainly don't want the potential liability of not having brakes.
- JRscoobyExplorer IIWhat is GVWR of MH? That is what the brake system on MH was designed to stop. Now what is the GCVW of MH+car+dolly?
- LwiddisExplorer IIYour A’s brakes aren’t designed for an extra 4 to 5000 pounds.
- wjschillExplorerThanks for the responses.
Our fifth wheel had electric brakes, and we have a large boat trailer with surge brakes.
Any opinions out there for electric vs. surge on a car dolly? - carringbExplorerI'd recommend the ACME tow dolly with surge disc-brakes.
The new Camrys have gotten so big, there'd barely be clearance to the fenders on a turntable dolly, and possibly even a steerable dolly. The ACME dolly is fixed and mostly relies on tire scrub for turns. You your car can't kiss the fenders, and the loading height is lower. Plus, it's half the weight of other dollies, so it's easy to wheel around or flip-up on end for storage. - ferndaleflyerExplorer IIIDon’t want to discourage anyone from getting brakes but I have used a dolly without brakes for as long as I can remember with zero problems. I have hauled everything from an Excursion to my current Smart car. A DP like I have can stop it if it’s set up correctly.

I'm sure there are hundreds/thousands out there with the same story. doesn't affect my decision one iota.
