Sway Bar came loose

A couple of times now, I have had a problem where the sway bar came disconnected while I was driving. The pin that holds it at the A frame end fell off, and that end of the sway bar has hanging loose.

The first time, there was no problem driving, I didn't discover that it was disconnected until I went to un-hitch. But the recent time, some idiot tried to switch lanes (from two lanes over) right into me. I swerved, which started the trailer swaying. I was able to control it by using the manual lever on the brake controller, but not until the trailer had gone through three or four hard swings.

Has anyone else seen a bar get disconnected like that? On my trailer, the attachment point for the sway bar is jammed between the WDH attachment and the propane tanks. I had been putting the pin up from the bottom, because the top is blocked by the propane. I have now figured out how to do it from the top, so we will see if that fixes it. I did about 7000 miles of towing between the two incidents, so it may be a while before I know if this helped.

  • Thanks for the suggestion about D shaped clips. I will give that a try.

I've had that happen on my old hitch. I just re-bent the pin so it was tight. Dutchmen's idea is a good one too if you change styles of pin.
  • We bought new pins for our set up. Ours, like yours are close. We take the cover off the tanks to get the pins in, worked for us.
  • Rather than using the same Cotter Pin that came with the Sway Bar, why not switch pins and try something like this. There are many variations of this style, in different thickness's also,so one should fit through those holes:
