Since we can't go back and recreate the scene, all we can do is speculate.
It could be that during the gyrations, and assuming you let off the gas, perhaps it simply slowed enough to be below the critical speed at which sway would begin. So it may have simply straightened itself out. The loud groan may have just been the WD hitch making it's normal noise.
The more important point is the trailer and truck lash-up is likely wrong. I'd go back and start from the beginning to get a good setup that will not sway.
