I have a tankless. The tech is wrong. It wastes no more water than a conventional water heater would to heat the line between the heater and the faucet. As somebody already said, it's all about how far the run is to where you need it. I really haven't noticed any increased propane usage either. It does make more noise when operating than a conventional water heater.
Using a tankless takes a bit of getting used to. Ours has a dial that you set. The idea is that you set this dial based upon incoming water temperature. If you are taking from your tanks in warm weather, then you set it low. If you are running it from a camp ground source and the water is very cold, set the dial to the high range. When you need hot water, you open the faucet all the way, wait for the water, then throttle it down to increase the temperature if needed. I actually never have to use the cold water.
It takes a bit of getting used to, but the advantage is that when you have full hook ups, the hot water is truly endless.
