Tankless Water Heater - does it waste water?

Thinking about getting a tankless (Girard?) and the tech we spoke to said that it wastes about 2 gallons of water just by turning on the hot water to get it hot, and that once it cools down, it wastes another 2 gallons the next time you run it.

Obviously if we are hooked up that's not a big concern, but if we are dry camping it might be an issue as a few turns of the hot water could full up the gray water rather quickly.

Has anybody experienced this? I'm surprised if it works this way. If it does, can the cold water be 'vented' out onto the ground somehow?

  • The water line from either hot water heater to the shower or sink is the same length for both. I could see it using a little more while it heats up, but not that much more.

We always have a pitcher around to catch the cold water and then use it in the toilet. If the grey tank is getting full, dump the dish soap in the black tank also.
