With tarps you definitely get what you pay for with regard to longevity. The shortest life will be the plastic ones. The longest life will be with the ones made from Sunbrella and the remainder fall in between in cost and durability.
Color also plays a roll and a black or red tarp will not last as long as a yellow or blue one due to the absorption of UV radiation. You can see this on boat sail covers in marinas or even on signs like the 7-Eleven signs where the red section is very faded but the green part still looks fine.
My wife makes our covers out of Sunbrella fabric. We have a cover for our patio table and chair set that has been out in the weather for the past 10 years and it still sheds water and is still in OK shape.
Buy the fabric and get someone at an awning or upholstery or boat cover shop to put it together and add nylon webbing loops at the points where you want to attach bungee cords to keep it in place.
