I have a dirt devil central vac and found it to work less then optimal. I purchased a Dyson DC44 Cordless and love it! I mounted the mounting bracket kind of behind the slide (unseeable when the slide is out) and it is always charged and easy to get to. This vacuum is amazing. Expensive? Yes. Worth it? I think so. I give it a 9.5 out of 10. QVC just ran a very good price on the 44 with many extras. Not sure if it is still available there at the special price.
Works great on all surfaces. I have a dog and it works well on pet hair. The only drawback worth noting for me is the canister needs dumping often.
