I know this is a little bit beside the point here, but given the general drift of this discussion I thought I'd offer it. If you want to stay alive, crime isn't your biggest concern. It turns out that spending a lot of time in rural America is far more dangerous. Why? Motor vehicle accidents. This insight has again been reaffirmed in a death statistics study reported here:Link
