I heard the news story on the TV this morning. I've lived in Memphis all of my life..... it's doesn't seem any different than any other city of it's size. I believe it's all hype... just another story.
I've had my second home in California for 24 yrs. and traveling around the state, there are some pretty bad area's in California too. You have to be smart and watch your surroundings.
My Dad had a retail store in Memphis that we just closed last year (he is 92). It had been opened since 1919 (started by great Uncle) and closed in 2012. In the early years it was a very Italian area that changed to all black. But, my family was respected in the neighborhood. If fact, as my Dad aged, the neighborhood looked out for him.
Back in about 1990 or so, my youngest sister went to visit my Dad's business and left her purse in the car. The window was broken and her purse stolen (learned her lesson not to leave a purse in a car)... Anyway, my Dad put the word on the street that it was his daughters purse that was stolen. Would you believe that the purse came back with all it's contents. The ultimate respect was shown. My Dad and his employees were good to everybody and they earned the respect of the neighborhood.
There are lots of good people out there, just don't judge by looks.
