Thanks for the advice about checking receptacles

I just wanted to say thanks to those of you who have in the past cautioned everyone to check out the power receptacle prior to hooking up in a campground. Yesterday my wife and I were setting up in a private campground in Pigeon Forge, TN. I plugged in my polarity tester which indicated the receptacle was properly wired. When I checked the voltage however, my meter read only 107 volts. In addition, the 30-amp male plug came out of the receptacle WAY too easily. I contacted park management, and a maintenance man was dispatched immediately to see what the problem was. He removed the cover plate from the power box and discovered that both the hot and neutral wires were toasted, with sections of melted and discolored insulation. In addition, the ground wire showed signs of corrosion. The plastic around the wire connection screws on the back of the receptacle was cooked and part of it had fallen away around the hot terminal. The maintenance man replaced the wires and the receptacle and checked voltage, which then was 115 volts. He said that was normal for the park at that time of day (noon).

I doubt my A/C would have appreciated the low voltage had I not closely checked out the receptacle, and I really wanted to thank you all who have reminded everyone of the importance of doing these simple inspections every time we hook up.
