I always worried that gripey people were just gripey...BUT, we bought a camper 15 years ago and 100 miles away. Needed some routine stuff, called a local RV place to be told, if we didn't sell it, we won't work on it.

When I bought my first used RV from a private party I found this very "same" thing out.
Here I thought I was lucky enough to have an RV dealership/repair shop just blocks away. Only to find out they only work on RV's that they sell.
Yup they sell enough RV's to have their repair shop full so I guess they can do what they want.
I did buy parts and all the RV things we need from them. And I had my propane filled there regularly. They got to know me on a first name basis because I was there so often. I always waved to the service manager as I hit the parts store as I did every time I went there.
Fast forward a year later and I pulled in for my weekly propane fillup which the service department was in charge of and asked if they could get me in for a repair. They said yup! Bring it in in the morning.
The service department usually doesn't know if you bought it there or not. That response if you didn't buy it here we won't work on it is from management/sales. I'll bet that OP phone call was answered by someone up front.
