3500 RAM/Cummins/AISIN SRW LONGBED will handle any 14K with ease. If you are thinking of going larger in the near future I would get the same truck in a Dually. Highly advise the factory rear air ride with the 3500 RAM's.
I tow 33K combined in all road and weather conditions with ease. At the end of a long day of towing I am NOT wiped out.
You definitely hit home when you said, "At the end of a long day of towing I am NOT wiped out." This is something I can relate too, mostly due to the tensity I feel any time I feel any side to side motion in the rear. When you say you tow 14K with ease, is that at 70mph freeway speeds, or 55mph county road speeds? I dont think I'll buy a truck based on my future fifth wheel (though that is smart for some!) because the fifth wheel the wife and I now has is pretty slick and should be around for awhile. Also, I'll probably buy a truck with anywhere from 150,000 to 180,000 miles so by the time we upgrade our fifth wheel the truck will probably have enough miles to move along as well. If you're confident a 1 ton SRW will be more than enough at that I shouldn't feel much side motion at 70mph, thats the way I want to go!
