For us it was financially advantageous since we had six or more with us when RVing with our kids. Even with the $300 monthly RV payment it was a no-brainer, but that isn't close to the reason why we purchased an RV in the first place.
Sure, we still did trips via hotels when using the RV was not feasible due mostly to time constraints, actual quality time spent with the kids on those trips was minimized by comparison. No doubt we enjoyed these trips but not to the extent we do when RVing.
At present our kids are now grown and between college and work have very little time to accompany us on our RVing adventures, although they speak of missing out with the fond memories of yesteryear clearly etched in their voices. They hope to relive them with their own kids one day.
Now it is just my DW and I RVing at our whim, with the focus of our travels geared to our mature driven interests. We still do hotels/resorts, particularly when our rig is winterized, but each time one of us always states we wish we would have done so with our RV.
To that end we are currently shopping for our next rig. We will keep our current RV and place it on some property we own, our new rig will be more suited for couples and extended stays at our favorite locations. I guess we don't care about what it costs.
