it's going down because more people are driving a prius like me, and extending times between gas station visits! and if electric car makers succeed in getting a real range on their cars, oil companies are in trouble.
Funny folks like to tout their electric or hybrid cars as zero emissions, good for the environment, etc. I was talking to a guy with a Volt who was spewing its virtues. Since he had a pretty long commute, and electricity isn't exactly cheap, I asked him if it was really worth it. He smugly said of course, and that since the State University where he taught had free recharging stations, it was really cheap. Hey pal, that's not free, my taxes are helping to fuel your car!
Between the toxic batteries, the coal/natural gas/nuclear power used to create the electricity, these cars aren't the most environmentally friendly!
Most of what makes up the fuel prices is taxes. As more cars become more efficient, they're only going to raise the tax.
So, I don't know what you camp with, but how well does the Prius tow? Or do you use a 5mpg mh to pull it?
