Everybody really needs to check your gas mileage on the cheaper gases like Walmart, Sheetz, Giant foods, etc. I think that if you do this you will see that the 2 or 3 cent savings in cost is not worth...

2 things matter here. Percentage of ethanol added and octane.
Pumps(in this area at least) state up to 10% ethanol so you never know what is what except in the colder times of year when you know the ethanol is in there for emissions. The local merchants that sell ethanol free gas are usually making huge money on it because of the hype when it should actually be cheaper. Old supply and demand at work.
Octane is a subject very much debated on mpg, I can only speak for my own personal experience. The diff is more pronounced when towing, but the effect of more ignition timing allowed by modern engines when octane is higher allowed me enough better mpg to more than offset the added cost. Until the robber barons started charging 30 and 40 cents or more for the mid and high grade when it used to be a dime. I could carry hills better without downshifting as well. Again, just my personal experience.
PS No offense but your FIL might want to keep it quiet that he was a VW master tech. :)
