You need to go and talk to your Dr and have a very long conversation. Tell him/her exactly how you are feeling. Print of this post you have written and have him read it if it is easier. Explain in detail your fear and concerns. If needed ask him to refer you to a specialist and a councillor to get help with your concerns.
I have degenerative disks in my back and at times the pain is unbearable. Our friend has the same condition but has had rods put in his back. He has a DP and is quite happy.
